ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapters the focus has been centred on the contribution psychology can make to understanding why a person commits a crime. However, the study of crime encompasses more than just the criminal: a crime may be the beginning of a chain of events which starts with the police, moves through the courts, and ends with a sentence of one type or another. In this and the following two chapters each of these three areas-the police, the courts, and the management of sentenced offenders-will be looked at from a psychological perspective.
