ABSTRACT

Have I got what it takes to be a strategic leader? Do strategic leaders matter? Some do, some don’t, and a lot more could. 1

The first book on business strategy I ever read was by Igor Ansoff. Recently I re-opened it, and understood how much has changed in the way we think about business strategy – and how much remains the same. 2

While certainly extreme and clearly over the line, it appears unlikely the Enron cover-up began as a widespread conspiracy to commit fraud. Rather it seems mostly a case of a business strategy not delivering expected results (quickly enough) and a short-term solution getting totally out of hand. 3

In today's environment, we no longer view the defining role of the CEO as master-strategist or expect a single mind to do all of the thinking for our organisations. The role of the CEO is just as concerned with shaping the organisational context within which a compelling vision, moral purpose and creative strategy are most likely to emerge. 4
