Context and social background Great Expectations was published in serial form between 1860 and 1861, in the magazine All the Year Round, which Dickens founded and owned. It succeeded Household Words, in which Hard Times was published. Commenced in 1859, the magazine continued in print for some 20 years after Dickens’ death, being produced by his son, Charles. The novel A Tale of Two Cities was also published in All the Year Round.
