ABSTRACT

This chapter provides examples of exemplary leadership in a range of early years settings. Also outlined are a range of professional development routes for early years professionals wishing to take on a leadership role. The chapter includes the revised EYFS framework section on safeguarding and welfare requirements. Ofsted surveys provide extensive evaluations of the strengths of leaders in early years settings from Children’s Centres to nursery schools in some very diverse locations. One of the most challenging leadership roles is that of the EYFS leader in a primary school with children attending a nursery part-time. Nonetheless, the attributes of leaders are fairly consistent whatever the circumstances of their leadership. It is clear from all surveys, especially those of the effectiveness of Sure Start Children’s Centres, that there is a strong correlation between the effectiveness of the setting and the quality, drive and vision of the leader.
