ABSTRACT

There are of course differences of organisation and timetable, staffing and provision among first schools, and between classes for newcomers to the educational system. For all that, the requirements of this age group, as in our society they are perceived and interpreted, are such that the observer is forcibly struck by the similarities that obtain, and familiarity in this case confirms the initial impression. There are well-established habits and expectations to which teachers, even in the exceptional circumstances of those discussed in the preceding chapter, feel obliged to conform.
