      ABSTRACT

In this chapter we deal with some of the issues surrounding two quite different approaches to teaching practice based on genre theory. The fIrst was pioneered by the Metropolitan East Disadvantaged Schools Program's Language and Social Power Project and since has become known as the curriculum cycle or the 'wheel'. The second approach is a response to the problems encountered with the 'wheel' model - particularly as experienced in high schools - and reflects another view of genre theory.
