ABSTRACT
As outlined in the introduction, an important function of marriage is reciprocal
validation and protection of the partners’ self-esteem. No matter how dysfunctional
a marriage may appear to be from an outsider’s perspective, it is assumed that re-
ciprocal validation still exists to some degree, or else-unless it is perceived to be
nonvoluntary by one or both spouses-the marriage would have been dissolved.
