The works listed here have been selected as providing accessible avenues for further study. Although they have often informed my argument, I have not referred to them in the notes to each chapter, but acknowledge my debt to them here. Works which do appear in the notes may prove useful if you want to follow up a particular point, but they are often quite specialized, and may be in languages other than English.
