Where is the PLA?

Before examining “where” the PLA ground forces are located throughout China, it is first necessary to ask “why” they are stationed where they are. Or, what are the missions of the units scattered all over the country? Generally speaking, PLA ground forces are garrisoned throughout the country to protect China's sovereignty from foreign and internal enemies, to support national economic development, and to assist in the maintenance of domestic stability. The Second Artillery is tasked with “deterring other countries from using nuclear weapons against China, and for conducting nuclear counterattacks and precision strikes with conventional missiles.” ¹ In recent years, all elements of the Chinese armed forces also have prepared for and participated in a wide variety of non-traditional security missions.
