ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the nature of comprehension and how comprehension develops. I then examine difficulties with comprehension. Identification and assessment of comprehension are discussed. Provision to improve comprehension is examined with regard to the curriculum and assessment, pedagogy, resources, therapy and school and classroom organisation. The main focus is on pedagogy and the pedagogical interventions discussed: teaching for (and reminders of) giving attention, teaching listening behaviour, reducing processing demands, supporting pragmatic understanding and allowing sufficient time to respond.
