ABSTRACT

To deliver zero carbon homes it will be necessary to decarbonise the energy supply. This in turn will necessitate the transformation of the energy industry. Various technological approaches for decarbonising the energy supply have been discussed in earlier chapters. Here the macro-level factors influencing the transformation of the energy industry will be discussed. The cultural, structural and practice dimensions of the energy industry and how they affect the rate at which it can transform will be explored. The industrial regimes do vary between case study countries at least in part driven by the different contexts in which they are set. However, these differences begin to highlight the conditions needed to encourage decarbonisation. Finally, the ability of bespoke, decarbonised energy systems to scale up will be discussed.
