ABSTRACT

Prometheus is a curiously vague personality in Greek myth. He is one of the less important gods. We know of only one cult of importance, at Athens, where he was the god of potters, worshipped sometimes with Hephaestus (the blacksmith) and Athena, who was also the patron of metal workers. Here Prometheus had one annual festival when there was a torchlight race. It seems that he had as a sort of title ‘pyrphorus’, i.e. fire-bearer. The fire and the craftsmanship of the potter (very important at Athens) based on the use of fire are closely connected with Prometheus and his cult.
