ABSTRACT

The Applied Prototypes are a series of design studies and performative analyses that speculate upon concepts, strategies, frameworks, and potential solutions for the redesign of the Nagayama area of Tama New Town through the year 2050. The work is comprised of three major areas: site concepts, foot-printing and strategies for infrastructure and land use; new housing studies at different densities; and measuring performance through the development of metrics for carbon reductions. The research team sought not to develop a fixed master-plan, but to establish a framework of elements and component parts which offer a flexible method by which a desirable, high quality, and environmentally sustainable community could imaginatively grow and evolve.
