ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 noted Archie and Luke's shared interests in recreating domestic scenarios in their play, revisiting spaces where they engage with their parents and other family members and friends on a regular basis. We reflected on whether Roxanna was stimulated to create the ‘assault course’ because her mother was in the army. We cannot know what the influences are on the children's play but reflecting on these aspects of just these three open-ended play vignettes should give some impetus to the notion that the ‘whatever you want it to be place’ offers opportunities for engaging with peers and for developing a sense of self that builds quite explicitly on one's day-to-day experiences with powerful role models within the home, the community and the wider environment.
