ABSTRACT
Assessment has taken on such importance in schools since the last few years of the twentieth century that the very word is saturated with associations of formality, anxiety, ritual and impending doom. Pupils take examinations that seem to assume increasing importance, schools are inspected, teachers are appraised. We live in a society with a high degree of accountability where public spending is concerned.
