ABSTRACT

It is a reality that for those of us in difficult schools, the management of behaviour is a relentless struggle. We are constantly required to evaluate and refine our strategies, and to search for new and innovative measures to stem what sometimes seems like an ever-rising tide. Nor can we ever relax our vigilance if we are to minimise disruption and anti-social behaviour. It is most important that all staff feel safe and supported when exercising their authority within the parameters of the behaviour action plan. If staff feel uneasy or exposed, they may be reluctant to try to operate and articulate the school’s position. This can result in a weakened and fragmented response to disruption. Youngsters will be quick to point out to you when you tackle them about whatever infringement they are involved in, that they passed Mr So-and-so and he didn’t say anything.
