ABSTRACT
Like many other people, I have so far been using the language name English as though there were not the slightest doubt about just what this name referred to. And of course it’ s true that we rarely have any trouble in distinguishing English from, say, French or Chinese. But that label ‘English’ is in fact a good deal slipperier than you might have supposed. Let’ s see why.
