ABSTRACT

Serena looked at herself in the full-length mirror in her bedroom. Perhaps she wasn’t so ugly after all. Earlier in the week she had overheard her mother telling their nosy neighbour Mrs Reyna that Serena was growing up into a ‘lovely young woman’. Serena considered her make-up: her mother disapproved of it – ‘at her age’ – and especially on school days, but it helped to conceal the last remaining adolescent spot on her lower left cheek while the eyebrow pencil helped to accentuate the deep brown of her eyes. Serena thought she might get to like herself after all.
