ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of SME development on both sides of the Atlantic. Similarities are noted and differences between the two regions highlighted. Starting from the proposition that SMEs are Europe’s backbone, it considers the role played by SMEs in recent history and goes on to look at overall numbers of firms, the importance of SMEs as a source of employment and their contribution in economic terms.
