ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a comparative analysis of the venture capital (VC) industries fuelling SMEs in different states of the EU. It first provides statistics that are broadly comparative, with a focus on the EU as a whole and the top markets. It then discusses VC activity within individual regions or states, to home in on strengths and problems that are important and comparable. This chapter is broadly comparative, focusing exclusively on VC markets, but with information about many EU countries. Indeed, some of the smaller countries are emphasised as much as the larger ones, to demonstrate the diversity of the markets, to introduce markets that may be less familiar to readers, and to avoid repetition.
