This chapter introduces Design and Technology by describing, briefly, what is required to be taught by the National Curriculum documents of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Introduction Design and Technology has been in the National Curriculum for ten years and has now become established as an important foundation subject. This has not been an easy process, however,as ‘Design and Technology’ was a new subject in 1990 and there was much discussion and debate about its purpose and its content. Early debates centred on the balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject, and on its vocational or general educational purposes. There were also concerns that teachers from the various contributing subjects1 did not have the experience to teach ‘Design and Technology’, especially in primary schools.
