ABSTRACT

At St James’ High School,Exeter, some Year 10 pupils manufactured garden tubs as a production line simulation. These were costed, produced and sold by the pupils to members of the school and to local tradespeople. Group work was possible in this project and the pupils split the tasks by forming a marketing group and a production group. With guidance from staff, the pupils handled problems of supplies, manufacture and quality assurance. In this particular project, the pupils followed a design strongly influenced by a member of staff in order to move quickly to learning about matters of production. So successful was their enterprise that one order from the manager of a local garden centre amounted to 25 tubs, and he asked for a discount!
