ABSTRACT

Because of the expanded educational opportunities and choices, teaching in an e-learning context is an onerous responsibility. The frame of e-learning extends interaction, choice, and movement, and this has a liberating and transformational effect on approaches to teaching. To not recognize this, to use the restricted frame of traditional classroom presentational approaches, is to ignore the capabilities of the medium and induce conflict. Implicit in this recognition is the need to rethink how we approach teaching in an e-learning context and how we examine the nature of our intended learning outcomes. Despite the unknowns associated with designing and delivering a meaningful and worthwhile e-learning experience, it is clear that these technologies provide enormous choice that cannot be ignored. Moreover, it will be through the presence of a competent and responsible teacher that this potential will be realized.
