ABSTRACT
The previous chapter has shown how the political trajectory of the post-communist states has been shaped by the circumstances of the initial process of regime change. Crucial here has been the role played by civil society forces in bringing about the change of regime. To understand why such forces were able to play a significant part in some countries but not in others, attention should be turned to the history of the development of civil society in this region.
