ABSTRACT
Increasing educational coverage and educational equity have been permanent goals of distance education institutions in Latin America. Another important goal has been to improve the quality of education through innovation in technologies and methods. If one looks back sixty years, having in mind what is now called distance education, the obvious conclusion is that there has been an evolution in several stages, under the influence of shifts in technology.
