ABSTRACT

The book is a collection of papers that were presented at the workshop entitled ‘Europe and the Developing World in the Global Information Society’, held in Maastricht on 1719 October, 1996.

The workshop was jointly funded by DGV of the European Commission and by UNU/INTECH. The mode of funding itself was significant as it reflected the need for a dialogue between the European Commission (EC) and the United Nations (UN)—two international policymaking bodies with distinct and somewhat different briefs. The principal aim of the EC is to promote the competitiveness of its member countries. The goal of the UN is to assist growth and sustainable development in the developing nations. The workshop provided a forum for exploring whether these distinct objectives could be pursued independently in an increasingly interdependent world.
