ABSTRACT

The pulmonic egressive airstream mechanism is involved in the production of all phonetic segments of the language. Although nasalization of vowels is predictable in contemporary standard Marathi, the question of the phonemic contrast between oral and nasal vowels is controversial in Marathi and in other Indo-Aryan languages. In contemporary standard Marathi, the nasal vowels of old Marathi are realized either as a sequence of a nasalized vowel and a nasal consonant homorganic with the following consonant see the plural forms of nouns. The structure of the lexical morphemes is the structure of their citation form to some extent. Noun forms occur in their citation forms in the nominative case. Also, the citation forms do occur at the syntactic level as well. An increment vowel is inserted between nominal, infinitival, adjectival, and participial stems and the case-suffixes or postpositions. The distribution of increment vowels is determined by the gender, number, and shape of the stems.
