ABSTRACT

Building technology is a huge subject and this section only offers a number of discussions on how in general terms the specific requirements of technology influence architecture. In general terms, technology is concerned with what is possible or practically feasible, and for many centuries a major impulse for designers and builders was simply to push back these frontiers. Later, new methods and materials began to offer everincreasing choices for architects. Today, a technological condition has been reached in architecture whereby any conceivable technical advance could be achieved if sufficient political will and finances existed. In reality, the challenge for the contemporary architect is how to harmonize the technological opportunities with everything else, since most building technology is not confined by what is possible but by what is conventionally believed to be appropriate. However, many architects are still inspired by the prospect of using their design skill and courage to create something that has not been done before.
