ABSTRACT

The design approach is based on the belief that effective architectural solutions are encapsulated in a multiplicity of factors and systems, determined by social, economic, technological and environmental references unique to the project. Hence only a design method based on initiation (intuitive and factual), analysis, synthesis and evaluation (including an understanding and celebration of human factors) can respond to this uniqueness (see Figure 2). This approach considers that art and science have a prominent and determining presence. A creative framework is generated from the contrast between the stimulus of art, emotions, desires, individuality, perception, foresight and celebration, and the impetus of science, analysing the deficiency of knowledge with indifferent, impartial (rarely tolerant) observation of the ideas behind the facts. Hence the initial reactions to the project have been intuitive, followed by analysis to clarify the scope and means of the programme. Synthesis of analysed observations blends the various components, offering a base for humanistic celebration of the strategic design solutions. These processes induce the client and consultant to active participation in a direct and personal dialogue. Parallel to this a dialogue between the historical memory and nature of the site takes place while society's observing and controlling bodies participate.
