ABSTRACT

Architecture is not just an activity or an event or a collection of artefacts. It is not even simply an art. Architecture is fundamental to all human affairs; it stands at the very beginning of civilization, for without it there would be no possibility of civilization or culture. Architecture is inescapable, universal, endless and continuous. It is also elementary. lt spans between the crudest form of accommodation in a cave to the most complex kind of sophisticated, artificial environment. But whatever its scale and whatever its complexity, for the most part it means shelter.
