ABSTRACT

The organization of domestic units is highly dependent on the division of labour, and the interaction of roles are clearly defined according to age and gender. In this chapter the focus will be on the community’s ideas on gender differences and distinctions according to age. Also, since social and economic life is so closely linked with kinship networks, local thought on kin distinctions will also be incorporated into the overall discussion. These concepts about gender, age and kinship refer to the nature of human beings as a whole and to the issues of morality that concern it. They also provide, both for themselves and the anthropologist, a kind of ‘logic’ with which to understand domestic organization as described in the previous chapters.
