ABSTRACT

The Hunger Report, an annual assessment of the state of hunger in the world, introduces the issue in this way: ‘No one really knows how many hungry people there are in the world. No one knows the toll of hunger because hunger is difficult to define, because the statistical data are weak or nonexistent, and because efforts to improve data collection and analysis have been limited. But beyond these real difficulties, we may not know how many hungry people there are in the world because we may not want to know. To know how many hungry there are in a world of plenty is to measure the inadequacies of our economies to sustain all, of our societies to provide for all, and of our common humanity to care for all’.
