ABSTRACT

Nonetheless, soil loss-whether technically described as desertification or not-is still a pressing global concern. Soil loss is threatening agricultural viability on all six continents. In Australia, six tonnes of topsoil are eroded for every tonne of produce grown; in the USA, a third of all cropland is affected by erosion; over much of Asia, 40 percent of the land is at high risk of erosion or desertification.
