International information on levels of municipal and household waste generation, most experts agree, is little more than an educated guess, although some general points are clear: worldwide generation of waste appears to amount to about one billion tonnes per year, and is growing rapidly; the biggest waste producers are rich countries and, within poor countries, rich people. Affluence produces effluence, literally.
