ABSTRACT

This map identifies the major accidents of the past twenty years that have occurred during the manufacture and transport of hazardous industrial products. It does not include accidents that occur in their end-use and application. There are several biases in the data. More is known about accidents in the ‘developed’ world and, by definition, the focus is on acute events rather than chronic releases (see Map 25). Then there is a general absence of accidents involving weapons factories, military research laboratories and other military installations because of a dearth of information.
