Recent revelations in the US media underscore the chronic nuclear pollution and heavy environmental damage caused by military nuclear facilities. Leaks of radioactive materials from the Rocky Flats facility threaten the drinking water supply of Denver; the Fernald materials production plant in Ohio has released more than 300 tonnes of uranium dust into the surrounding air and water; the agricultural land around Hanford, Washington, shows high levels of radiation.
