ABSTRACT
In this chapter I trace briefly the historical development of the concept of psychopathic disorder against the background of more general observations on personality. Causal, or supposed causal, factors are then described, a simple classification is suggested and some of the key characteristics of the disorder are outlined as a prelude to comments on management.
