NINETY-NINE NAMES OF GOD It is traditionally held that God has ninety-nine beautiful names and there is general agreement on some of them. Others, however, come into some lists but not others. They are often recited by Muslims, since ‘The most beautiful names belong to God: so call on Him by them’ (7.180). After all, ‘He is Allah, the Creator, the Originator, the Fashioner, to Him belong the most beautiful names: whatever is in the heavens and on earth, do declare His praises and glory. And He is the exalted in might, the wise’ (59.24). A fairly standard rendering of the
names follows. It should be borne in mind that there are plenty of formulations that leave out some of these names and include others instead.
