ABSTRACT

In this chapter I shall analyze two domestic crises that can be modeled by games vulnerable to the use of threat power. In one, threats seem to have “worked” according to the theory of threats developed in Chapter 5. In the other, the threat by one player was more implicit than explicit, though in the end it had an effect. Unfortunately for the players, its effect was the opposite of what was intended-it backfired, hurting both sides.
