ABSTRACT

Chapters 3 and 4 examined sexual stratification in the workplace. Chapters 5 to 7 study gender inequality in the home sphere, i.e. the allocation of housework (i.e. family work) and domestic power between the husband and the wife. Domestic power is examined in Chapter 7. Chapters 5 and 6 investigate gender gaps in housework, i.e. physical, mental, and social tasks performed in the family. 1 Housework includes both household tasks and household management. This chapter focuses on the allocation of physical housework (i.e. household tasks) among Uyghur couples in Ürümchi, i.e. daily chores such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc. The mental and social tasks, i.e. household management, are investigated in Chapter 6.
