ABSTRACT
Speaking in the House of Commons on 19th August 1847, Thomas Babington Macaulay described candidates for teaching as ‘the refuse of all other callings … whom no gentleman would trust with the key of his cellar and no tradesman would send on a message. Yet such are the men to whom you trust the rising generation.’
