Before law and the bans on religious symbols in schools can be discussed, there are a number of key terms and concepts that need to be examined. First of all, the meaning of the terms ‘religion’ and ‘belief ’, which are often used together in human rights instruments and anti-discrimination legislation, 1 need to be analysed.
