ABSTRACT

Having considered in Chapter 3 some historical developments in language teaching and key research findings in FLL and SLA, in this chapter we present some of the main pedagogical approaches adopted by FLs teachers. The pedagogical approaches discussed in this chapter come under the banner of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) or ‘non-synthetic’ approaches to FL teaching. By non-synthetic we mean approaches that present language in a more holistic way, using it to perform communicative tasks, in contrast to synthetic approaches that focus on specific aspects of the language system (e.g. on grammatical structures, functions). The approaches under consideration are Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP), Taskbased Learning and Teaching (TBLT), and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
