ABSTRACT

The purpose of this appendix is to set out the ways in which the complexity sciences are drawn upon to think about life in organizations. It considers two questions: Are the natural complexity sciences valid sources for management thinkers to turn to? If so, how might it be valid to use them in order to understand human action? Some make direct applications of the ideas in the complexity sciences to organizations. Others use the science in a loose metaphorical way. Yet others regard the sciences as source domains for analogies. This appendix sets out our position.
