ABSTRACT
This chapter has two objectives: to review current codes of practice, and to outline the history of their development. The treatment will be by country, with reference to design philosophy and primary design loads for both road and rail bridges. Code provisions for pedestrian bridges and other loads will be discussed in later chapters.
