ABSTRACT

Some further siitras: 'Garland' (Avatalflsaka), 'Lotus' (Saddharmapu1J,rJarlka) and 'Skill in Means' (Upiiyakausa/ya) Let me now introduce briefly some of the main ideas of two large Indian Mahayana sutras that have become particularly important in East Asian Buddhism. These are the enormous and heterogeneous Avataytlsaka ('Garland') Sidra (Chinese: Huayen) and the famous Saddharmapwujarfka (,Lotus') Sutra. The Upayakausalya ('Skill in Means') Sutra will serve as an additional sutra source devoted entirely to one of the principal doctrines of the Lotus, the teaching of skill in means (upaya/upayakausa/ya).
