ABSTRACT
This is the seventh volume of my writings which Routledge (and its predecessors) have published. The first, Studies in International Investment dates back to 1971. In the intervening years, my thoughts on this subject, and of the role of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the world economy have evolved through a number of stages-some of which were described in the introductory chapter of my last book of essays, Alliance Capitalism and Global Business (1997a).
