ABSTRACT
It is always preferable to look at the converse of this, by means of positive attempts to develop self-discipline through motivating pupils and developing their self-esteem. Pupils have positive attitudes and characteristics when they feel that:
• they are valued by the teachers and other staff; • teachers are approachable through informal as well as formal relationships; • they have opportunities to display their talents and enthusiasms; • they are treated as responsible ‘adults’; • they are valued by their friends and peers; • they are able to talk through their problems with sympathetic adults; • good and poor behaviour are dealt with in a consistent way; • rewards and sanctions are applied in a reasonable, ‘fair’ way.
