ABSTRACT

The key words in this definition are ‘authority’ and ‘responsibility’ and it is these two words which distinguish empowerment from delegation. The decisions that people take for themselves are the ones which they carry out with the greatest enthusiasm. Empowerment is, therefore, a great motivator; it enriches the jobs of others, improves performance and is excellent for team morale. Additionally, effective empowerment relieves the leader of some tasks, which should allow the leader greater time and freedom to be more involved in true leadership functions.
