ABSTRACT
What makes a good father-daughter relationship? Are such relationships affected
by the structure of the family? What are the experiences of lone fathers and
daughters living together? And those of fathers who are trying to become like a
‘real’ father to daughters who are not their own? This chapter outlines some of the
characteristics that have been assigned (especially by women) to definitions of a
‘good’ father-daughter relationship, and explores some specific experiences of
fathers and daughters in situations other than the so-called nuclear family.
